Climate Change

Will climate change affect your life? Climate change is occurring because there is more carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. The CO2 is thickening in the atmosphere and therefore, it traps heat and increases the earth’s temperature.

Everyone and everything is the world will be affected by climate change; new species will arise, old ones will die away. Even people will experience extreme impacts from the change such as: rising waters, wet and dry spells, increase in insects and species in the oceans dying; here are some facts and my opinions on these topics…..

Rising Waters

Rising waters are a huge change; this will not only ruin farms because of salt water and fresh water mixing but tens of millions of people live just above sea level. This would mean for many who live on islands packing up and moving off the island there whole family grew up on. I think this would be hard on many families especially ones with spiritual ties to the place they grew up.

Wet Spells

In some places in the world, such as the Arctic the amount of rain is going to increase drastically to the point where there will be more rain then snow! These intense rain spurts will increase the number of floods and landslides in those areas; disasters like this can destroy towns, kill people, damage crops and ecosystems. I believe this will impact the economics and the environment in these areas to a point where there will not be anyone living in those areas anymore.

Dry Spells

Many other places in the world the amount of rain will decrease, such as in Africa, there are already many droughts in Africa and with even less rain that woulkd mean that crops wouldn’t grow. Many animals will die from thirst and this means there is less food’ and therefore less imports and exports because of a decline in funds. My opinion is that many people will move to more flourishing lands.

In the long run climate change is going to affect everyones lives, the extreme impact of these changes will change not only the way we live but who we are as a civilization.

Melody, you are an eloquent blogger. I was intrigued with your line "I think this would be hard on many families especially ones with spiritual ties to the place they grew up." This is an interesting consideration; one we don't often think about, but you're exactly right. We are tied to the environment in more ways than economically; our earth feeds and sustains us "spiritually" as well. Nicely written piece, Melody.
